Today, I wanted to share the amazing story of Thomas, a new and great friend of mine. We met at the gym 3 months ago, and he shared his story with me, the story of how fitness saved a life, his. I was blown away, and you’ll see why.
The story of Thomas
“Last year I had a wake-up call. I was chasing my son in the park when I had a heart attack. I can’t forget the scared look on my son’s face when I collapsed. He thought I was dying, and I was. I would never want to put him through that again. Luckily, other parents were in the park and called an ambulance. I underwent a minor heart surgery that repaired my heart valves stayed in the hospital for three weeks… I couldn’t think of anything else during that time, you may recover physically, but the look on my son’s face I couldn’t forget.
“He thought I was dying, and I was”
As soon as I was well enough, I consulted my doctor and then started a fitness regime. I knew that part of what caused my heart attack was my level of unfitness and I had to address that. I started off by doing some brisk walking and gradually moved on to jogging. I was amazed how much stronger I felt just by doing these tasks and I wanted to do more. I read that cardio exercises strengthened the heart, which pushed me to take the next step, and so I registered at the local gym. I trained four times a week, doing mostly cardio and bodyweight exercises. The training was grueling and there were times when I wanted to give up but I was determined to get fit, for me, but mostly for my son.
“I was determined to get fit, for me, but mostly for my son”
Exercising is now an important part of my daily life and I wouldn’t give it up for the world. In the past, I became breathless just by doing small tasks, after doing anything really. Now, I seem to have more energy than I can handle. I feel so much more in control of my life now. I am fitter now than I’ve ever been and I look better and feel much better too. The best thing of all is that I can now chase my son without the fear of keeling over. I won’t kid you though, it gets tough, but the feeling of being fit, being healthy and knowing that your hearth –your engine- is finally tuned-up is powerful and life-changing. There’s no one day that goes by I don’t remember how fitness saved my life.
Don’t do what I did, don’t wait until the (literally) last second to adopt a healthier lifestyle… you’ll thank yourself for it.”
